Issue tracking is the most important part of SDLC. Kualitee Issue tracking tools play an important role in resolving issues and ensuring a smooth-running system. Interestingly, if not done right, you can face issues in issue tracking as well. So, let’s discuss some of the common problems that teams face while keeping the transparency in the reported bug.

Improper Bug Logging Process

A basic rule of bug reporting is that bugs should be properly described and should be self-explainable. All required fields must be provided for effective communication with the developer. Leaving out important fields can lead to improper reporting of bugs. This can be due to issues such as incorrect defect title, missing expected result, error from the log file or steps to reproduce, etc. which increase the defect lifecycle.

Use of Different Issue Tracking Templates

A standard-issue tracking template must be used for reporting issues. All team members using the same template can cause discrepancies in the latter stages thus causing difficulties in report generation.

Improper Defect Triage Process

Bug triage process allows you to discuss all open defects and take necessary actions. This collaborative process requires the participation of developers, managers, and testers who analyze all defects and determine a course of action to clearly understand the reason for blocking test execution.

Improper Setup of Severity and Priority

Severity, priority, and time are three important and somewhat interlinked factors associated with issue tracking. A bug must be prioritized based on its urgency and severity. A high priority bug would require fixation in a very short time. All of these three factors are not fixed and vary from defect to defect. The problem arises when testing and development teams are not well-educated on these factors which could affect the issue tracking in the defect lifecycle.

No Control on Test Environment

Lack of control on the test environment can leave testers clueless regarding new issues fixed or added by informal changes made by the development team. Lack of control on the test environment also leads to retesting & regression testing which affects the quality level of software application.

Inefficient Communication

Testers should strictly adhere to issue tracking tools when it comes to conveying the defects to developers as opposed to using email or phone which causes a bad impact on issue tracking and is a bad practice. This will help in understanding the stability of software applications and these statistics will help a lot in managing upcoming releases.

Poor Status Maintenance

Delay in updating defect status timely affects issue tracking. For example, even if the bug is fixed and verified, its status will still appear as “open” in the bug tracking report if the status is not updated. This can cause misleading statistics in the report.
